Does Your Supplement Cabinet Pass the Test?

Does Your Supplement Cabinet Pass the Test?

At Seven Victory Fitness Collective, we believe better performance and long-term health start with informed decisions. That includes how you train, how you fuel your body, how you recover, and what you choose to put in your supplement cabinet.

But here’s a question worth asking: Do you know why you’re taking the supplements you take—and how well you know the products behind them?

With countless supplements promising better performance, faster recovery, improved sleep, and greater overall wellness, it can be difficult to separate meaningful evidence from marketing. Knowing which ingredients may be beneficial is only part of the equation. It’s also important to understand how those ingredients are sourced, how products are tested, and whether the brand behind them holds itself to a consistent standard.

That’s one of the reasons we’re excited to offer Momentous supplements at Seven Victory Fitness Collective.

Momentous approaches supplementation through what it calls The Momentous Standard®: three essential considerations designed to help consumers make more informed choices.

Three Questions to Ask About Your Supplements

Before you automatically restock your favorite protein powder, creatine, or daily vitamins, take a few minutes to audit your supplement cabinet. You don’t need to throw everything away or overhaul your entire routine. Start by asking better questions.

1. Science: Is There Credible Research Behind It?

A supplement should have a clear purpose, supported by credible scientific evidence. That means looking beyond a catchy label or a claim that sounds impressive and asking what research actually says about the ingredient, its dosage, and the outcome you’re hoping to achieve.

For example, creatine monohydrate has substantial research supporting its role in improving performance during repeated high-intensity exercise and supporting strength and lean mass gains when combined with resistance training. Protein supplements can also be a convenient way to help meet daily protein requirements when whole-food sources aren’t practical.

However, evidence for one ingredient doesn’t automatically validate every product containing it. The specific ingredient, dosage, formulation, and intended use all matter.

Momentous says its approach evolves with the research, adding products when evidence meets its standard and removing them when it no longer does. One example from the campaign is its decision to remove Fadogia after new studies emerged that did not support its continued inclusion under the brand’s standard.

The takeaway? Don’t just ask whether a supplement is science-backed. Ask what the science supports, at what dose, and for what purpose.

2. Sourcing: Do You Know Where the Ingredients Come From?

The quality of a supplement isn’t determined by its ingredient list alone. Where an ingredient comes from, how it’s manufactured, and why a particular source was selected can all be important considerations.

Two products may list the same ingredient on the label, but that doesn’t necessarily mean their sourcing practices, manufacturing processes, or quality controls are identical.

According to the Momentous campaign, the brand reassessed its creatine sourcing and formulation even though its existing product already met its standard. When the team identified an opportunity to raise that standard, it made the change.

That illustrates an important principle: quality shouldn’t simply mean meeting the minimum requirement. It should involve continually evaluating whether a better option is available.

When assessing your own supplements, look for brands that can explain where their ingredients originate, how they are produced, and what steps they take to maintain consistency and quality.

3. Certification: Is There Independent Verification?

Supplement labels can make impressive promises, but how are those claims verified?

Third-party testing and certification can provide an additional layer of confidence by independently evaluating specific quality and safety criteria. Depending on the certification, this may include checks related to ingredient identity, purity, label accuracy, contaminants, or prohibited substances.

Momentous reports that its products are NSF certified and tested for heavy metals. The campaign also states that if a batch fails its quality requirements, it is destroyed rather than released to customers.

Independent certification matters because it introduces accountability beyond a brand’s own claims. It’s still important to understand what a particular certification covers, since not every certification verifies the same things and certification status can vary by product.

For competitive athletes, third-party certification may be especially relevant when evaluating supplements for sport-related contamination risks. Always verify the specific product and certification rather than assuming every product from a brand has identical coverage.

The goal isn’t to find the most impressive label. It’s to find evidence that supports the claims being made.

Why All Three Matter

Science. Sourcing. Certification.

Each addresses a different part of the decision-making process:

  • Science helps establish whether a supplement has a credible purpose.
  • Sourcing helps you understand where ingredients come from and how they are produced.
  • Certification provides independent verification against defined quality standards.

One consideration alone doesn’t tell you everything you need to know. A well-researched ingredient doesn’t automatically guarantee quality manufacturing, and a certification doesn’t establish that a supplement is necessary or effective for your individual goals.

This is the thinking behind The Momentous Standard®: evaluating all three areas together rather than relying on a single promise.

At Seven Victory, we believe this is a useful framework for anyone who wants to make more intentional choices about their nutrition and performance.

How to Audit Your Own Supplement Cabinet

You don’t need to be a nutrition expert to get started. Set aside a few minutes, pull out the supplements you use regularly, and turn the bottles around.

For each product, ask yourself:

Science

  • What specific purpose am I taking this for?
  • Is there credible research supporting the ingredient and dose for that purpose?
  • Is the benefit relevant to my goals?

Sourcing

  • Can the brand explain where its ingredients come from?
  • Is there information about manufacturing and quality controls?
  • Can the company explain why it chose those ingredients and sources?

Certification

  • Is the product independently tested or certified?
  • What does that certification actually verify?
  • Can I confirm the certification applies to this specific product?

If you don’t know the answers yet, that’s okay. Use those questions as a starting point to learn more about the products you take every day.

And remember, even a high-quality supplement isn’t automatically necessary for everyone. Your individual needs depend on your diet, training, health, and goals. Supplements should complement the fundamentals—not replace a balanced diet, consistent training, adequate sleep, and appropriate recovery.
